A slot machine is known by many names. In England it is a fruit machine, a Canadian would simply refer to it as the slots, while an Australian will be heard referring to a slot machine as a poker machine or for short pokies. A slot machine is basically a casino gambling machine with three reels that spin once a button is pushed. The original slot machines would pay out a prize depending on which symbols would appear on the machine when the reels came to a stop. Modern computer technology has resulted in many different versions of the slot machines. Because there are no longer any mechanical constraints, the modern slot machines will often display five reels as opposed to the original three. The increase in the number of reels has greatly expanded the possibilities so that there are more frequent smaller payouts.
